10 things about Valentina Shevchenko, Kyrgyzstani-Ukranian-Peruvian MMA fighter

Valentina Anatolievna Shevchenko (Валентина Анатольевна Шевченко) is a professional mixed martial artist nicknamed Bullet. She is of Ukrainian descent, was born in Kyrgyzstan and is based in Peru.

Shevchenko is trained by Pavel Fedotov, who came up with her fight name because of her speed. She is a 2nd dan black belt and Master of Sports in taekwondo, an International Master of Sports in Muay Thai, a Master of Sports in boxing, a Master of Sports in kickboxing and black belt and Master of Sports in judo.

As an MMA fighter, Shevchenko has been competing professionally since 2003 and is best known for fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Here are 10 more facts about her:

  1. She was born on March 7, 1988 to Ukrainian parents in Frunze, Kirghizia, which is now Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Her older sister Antonina Anatolievna Shevchenko (Антонина Анатольевна Шевченко) is also a professional MMA fighter.
  2. She is 5’5″. As an MMA fighter, she competes in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions.
  3. In 1993, she started training in taekwondo. In 2000, she started training in Muay Thai. Her kickboxing career in the same year. As a Muay Thai fighter, she has represented Kyrgyzstan and Peru.
  4. She attended the University of Arts Kyrgyzstan where she earned a bachelor’s degree in film directing.
  5. From 2003 to 2015, she had a total of 50 wins in amateur and professional fights in K-1, Muay Thai and kickboxing. She joined the UFC in 2015.
  6. As a professional MMA fighter, she was undefeated from 2003 to 2006. She went on hiatus from 2007 to 2009. When she made her return in 2010, she was knocked out by Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche of the United States at “C3 Fights: Red River Rivalry” in Concho, Oklahoma, USA. She defeated Carmouch via unanimous decision in their rematch at “UFC Fight Night 156” at the Antel Arena in Montevideo, Uruguay on August 10, 2019.
  7. In 2008, she moved from Kyrgyzstan to Peru. When she visited Kyrgyzstan in April 2019, Kyrgyz president Sooronbay Jeenbekov awarded her with the Dank Order.
  8. On September 9, 2017, she failed to dethrone UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes of Brazil at “UFC 215” in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
  9. On December 8, 2018, she became the new UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion at “UFC 231” in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where she and Joanna Jędrzejczyk of Poland competed for the then vacant title. She successfully defended the title from Jessica Eye on June 8, 2019, Carmouche in their rematch and Katlyn Chookagian on February 8, 2020.
  10. She starred with Halle Berry, Shamier Anderson, Adan Canto, Sheila Atim andStephen McKinley Henderson in the sports film “Bruised,” which premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2020.
