Indonesia, the Netherlands and the Philippines were represented at the ONE Championship event “ONE: Warrior’s Dream,” which took place on November 17, 2018 at the Stadium Istora in Jakarta, Indonesia. The fight card featured three ONE Super Series striking contests and 11 mixed martial arts matches.
In the ninth bout of the evening, Anthony “The Archangel” Engelen, 33, of Indonesia and the Netherlands faced Jimmy “The Silencer” Yabo, 37, of Cebu City, Philippines. They competed in an MMA match at a catch weight of 72 kg.
A third-degree black belt in taekwondo, Yabo is one of the pioneers of the Philippines martial arts scene. He is known for his quiet demeanor that hides explosive firepower and all of his wins to date have come by way of knockout, which is testament to his fearsome punching power.
A patient fighter who likes to counterpunch, Yabo is as dangerous at the end of every bout as he is at the beginning as shown by his performances. He signed for ONE Championship in 2015 and has already put on several thrilling performances, the most famous of which was when he knocked out Bashir “Somchai” Ahmad, 36, of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan with one punch in just 21 seconds.
A former Indonesian Fighting Championship Lightweight Champion, Engelen trains out of Tatsujin Dojo in Deventer, Netherlands and Alliance Indonesia in Jakarta. The first opponent he defeated in ONE Championship was the late Rocky Batolbatol.
On November 9, 2018, Engelen made his return to the ONE Championship cage and knocked out Meas Meul, 27, of Phnom Penh, Cambodia in the featherweight division at “ONE: Heart of the Lion.” “ONE: Warrior’s Dream” marked the Indonesian-Dutch MMA fighter’s fourth bout in the organization.
Referee Yuji Shimada put a stop to the catchweight bout between Engelen and Yabo at 2:35 of the first round. The Indonesian-Dutch fighter submitted his Filipino opponent via rear-naked choke.
Winning at “ONE: Warrior’s Dream” improved Engelen’s professional MMA record to 8 wins and 4 losses. On the other hand, Yabo now has 5 wins and 7 losses.
