Filipino mixed martial artists Vaughn “The Spawn” Donayre, 38, Crisanto “The Slugger” Pitpitunge, 31, and Jon Chris “Happy Feet” Corton, 26, are currently in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. They will represent the Philippines in the 16th event of Bahrain-based MMA promotion Brave Combat Federation.
Featuring 11 bouts, “Brave 16” will take place at the Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi on September 21, 2018. Including the Philippines, 16 countries will be represented during the event.
The “Brave 16” public weigh-ins will take place on September 20, 2018. Prior to this, Pitpitunge, Corton and Donayre visited the office of Her Excellency Hjayceelyn Quintana, the Ambassador of Philippines to the UAE.
“This is part of our people to people diplomacy to make sure that our Emirati friends know that we are one with them in terms of promoting solidarity through sports,” Quintana said. “We are very proud that they are representing the Philippines here and hopefully we can also mobilize our people to see the event on Friday.”
Donayre is from Cebu while Pitpitunge and Corton are from Benguet. Both Donayre and Corton are making their Brave CF debuts at “Brave 16” while Pitpitunge is competing in the Bahrain-based MMA promotion for the second time.
Both Pitpitunge and Corton are training at Team Lakay. When the former made his Brave CF debut at “Brave 10: The Kingdom Rises” on March 2, 2018, he lost to Jalal Al Daja, 31, of Jordan.
At “Brave 16,” Pitpitunge will compete in the bantamweight division against Hamza Kooheji, 25, of Bahrain. It will be the fourth bout of the evening.
Corton’s “Brave 16” opponent Hussein “Iron” Ayyad, 24, is also from Bahrain. They will compete in the flyweight division in the first bout of the evening.
In the third bout, Donayre will compete against Flavio Serafin of Brazil in a catchweight bout. The Cebu native is looking to end his three-bout losing streak.
